Cathy Rutherford Senior Lecturer in Education

Having qualified as a teacher in 1995, Cathy became an acting head three years later. She went on to become headteacher in a range of schools, from a two-class rural primary school to a three-form entry infant school. She has also worked as a numeracy consultant, advising schools in the teaching of mathematics and running courses for teachers and as director of one of Shropshire’s two primary Teaching Schools where she designed and led the mathematics and other elements of a School Direct programme

Cathy has an M.Ed in Primary Mathematics and Educational Leadership & Management. Her research interests are focused within the sphere of primary mathematics education, in particular, on what factors affect how children record their mental maths strategies. She joined the Primary Team in 2020 and leads the maths provision, whilst working across a range of modules.

Andy joined Staffordshire University in the summer of 2015 after spending four years at Keele University whilst he completed a PhD in Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations. 

Before entering academia as a career, Andy had spent sixteen years working for the Ministry of Defence in Shropshire. Initially this was as an electrician but then having got involved with the trade union he became an elected representative. This role gave him an insight into employee relations that is invaluable in his teaching.

Dr Emma Turl Senior Lecturer

My background is in working with children, adolescents and families. I have worked for many years in a community-based early intervention children's service in Manchester city centre, so have worked with a great degree of complexity and adversity. I am interesred in the impact of trauma across the lifespan and am keen to discover more about how this impacts on pre-school children particularly. Dr Gavin McStay Associate Professor

Gavin's research interests focus on the roles mitochondria play in aspects of eukaryotic life, ranging from their origin, metabolism, biogenesis and role they play in cell death pathways.  These are interrogated using biochemical, molecular biology, genetic and cell biology techniques.  He incorporates these interests into classes he teaches to provide an understanding of practical techniques and also the current literature in the field.  He is also a strong supporter of scientific communications and outreach to disseminate scientific developments and knowledge to a broader audience with the goal of increasing the general support of the scientific process.

Dr Jacky Forsyth is a Senior Lecturer in exercise physiology. She conducts a wide range of leading research around women in sport and exercise, and specialises in the relationship between ovarian hormones, exercise and health.

Her research into the differences in fat oxidation between males and females after high intensity interval exercise was used in the BBC One documentary, The Truth about Fat.

Since finishing my doctoral research at the University of Sheffield in 2012, I have worked in commercial archaeology as both a field worker and an osteoarchaeologist and acted as a temporary Lecturer in in Archaeology at the University of Nottingham from 2013-2014.

My research focuses on the analysis of cremated human bone and what it can tell us about burning conditions from both archaeological and modern contexts.

Dr Sarah Misra Primary PGCE Award Leader, School Direct Lead and Senior Lecturer in Education

Sarah has had a lengthy (and happy) career in Primary Education with robust experience of teaching across the entire primary age range in mixed and single age year groups and in a variety of different schools and areas. She moved to Staffordshire University in 2013 to lead the Primary PGCE Core Award and the Primary School Direct Award and is also a supervisor on the Doctorate in Education.

Sarah is passionate about the arts and gained degrees in both History of Art & Design and Business Studies before studying Education in a Museum setting at the V&A Museum and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. She also worked in stage and costume design in the USA and as a Children’s Books Buyer before training as a teacher in 1996. She currently campaigns to raise the profile of the Arts in Primary Education and has edited and co-written a book; “Teaching the Primary Foundation Subjects” with Open University Press. In 2011 she joined Edge Hill University to lead the Foundation Subjects Team and now leads the foundation subjects and the Primary PGCE at Staffordshire University.

Sarah is passionate about social justice and gender equality and believes that education is the key to improving these. She has a Masters’ Degree and Doctorate in Education. Her research is primarily focused around developing more creative and inclusive methods of qualitative research including storytelling and arts-based research, such as the award-winning Plastic Ceiling Project, which was exhibited at Tate Liverpool in 2018. She has published and presented at international conferences on the challenges of juggling work and motherhood and has acted as a qualitative research consultant for the research arm of the NHS.

Tom’s research investigates health inequalities in socially deprived areas and evaluation of the sport-based programmes which aim to address these inequalities. His research also examines the policies which intend to achieve sporting and non-sporting outcomes along with various aspects of the policy process. To date, Tom has predominantly worked in partnership with football in the community charities to conduct his research and utilities a sociological perspective to support greater understanding of the complexities faced when enacting sport policy and funded programmes.

Sarah Gardiner Senior Lecturer in Education

Sarah spent the majority of her teaching career in primary schools in central London. Additional to her class teacher responsibilities she also had the role of subject leader for English and has specialised in this area of the curriculum for over 10 years. Sarah has also held Senior Leadership positions within school and had specific responsibility for developing a creative curriculum where good quality children’s literature provided the starting point for meaningful cross-curricular learning.

Upon leaving classroom teaching Sarah worked as an Advisory Teacher for the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education where she led professional development courses for teachers, teaching assistants and parents. A common theme running through the courses was on using creative teaching approaches alongside rich children’s literature to develop engaging learning experiences in English.

After CLPE, Sarah started in Initial Teacher Education and has held Senior Lecturer roles at Oxford Brookes University, Birmingham City University and now Staffordshire University where she taught on primary English modules on the undergraduate Primary Education with QTS degree and PGCE courses. Areas that are of particular interest to Sarah are children’s literature, using Lego to support storytelling and talk for spelling.

Sue Condie Theatre Designer

Sue has been designing for a variety of companies nationally for over twenty years. She regularly designs for The Stephen Joseph Scarborough and for Sixth Sense Theatre.

She has designed productions for Northern Broadsides/Dukes, Coventry Belgrade, Harrogate Theatre, Cheltenham Everyman, New Vic Stoke, Oldham Coliseum, Salisbury Playhouse, OTTC, Stroud Theatre Company, Spitz & Co, Kazzum, Reach Inclusive Arts and Action Transport.

Sue also works as an artist in schools leading design workshops and creating installations and large textile banners alongside regular teaching for the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Central St. Martins and Staffordshire University.

William Mitchell Project Archaeologist: Centre of Archaeology

William has worked on a number of forensic research projects throughout Europe, including sites of the Holocaust in Germany, Ukraine and Poland. Using non-invasive geophysical techniques, he has developed his specialism in the search and recovery of buried remains on sites of the recent past.
