Approach
University of Staffordshire, and its Students’ Union, are committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment for all our students.
The University prohibits the possession, use, or distribution of illegal drugs on or within any of its premises. The Harm Reduction approach recognises that in addition to prohibiting use, it is also essential to address situational realities for individuals with compassion, education, and holistic support.
We pride ourselves on providing support and education to encourage individuals to make positive life choices. This includes establishing a framework for acceptable and responsible behaviour, as well as outlining the consequences of not meeting these standards.
Our university community is important to us, we believe when harm reduction is practiced, it will foster a supportive environment where students look out for each other and where we can provide the appropriate resources for students to succeed for the future.
Holistic Support and Community Engagement
Harm reduction prioritises the well-being of our students, recognising that a wholly punitive approach can isolate and stigmatise individuals, deterring them from seeking the help they need. By fostering a community-centric approach, we aim to:
- Promote Education and Awareness: We provide education on the risks associated with drug use and the resources available for those seeking help. This respects autonomy and empowers students to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.
- Offer Accessible Support Services: Our university offers a range of support services both through the University and external sources. Assistance and resources are readily accessible for students impacted by alcohol or substance abuse issues. These resources are designed to be easily accessible and tailored to meet the diverse needs of our student body.
- Identifying Safe Practices: By educating students on safer practices and providing harm reduction tools and resources, we can minimise the potential risks associated with substance use. This includes offering guidance on safe consumption practices and access to support for those who choose to reduce or cease their use.
- Build a Compassionate Community: We strive to create a campus culture that is inclusive and supportive. By fostering an environment of understanding and empathy, we encourage students to seek help without fear of judgement or reprisal.
- Ensure accessibility of guidelines that outline acceptable and responsible conduct, and potential associated disciplinary measures for any misconduct.
Commitment to Safety and Well-being
Our harm reduction approach aligns with our commitment to the safety and well-being of all students. It recognises that the complexities of substance use can require a nuanced and compassionate response, one that supports students in making positive changes in their lives. We aim to do this through:
- Providing proactive services to support students dealing with substance-related issues.
- Providing education to students on the negative effects of substance misuse on both physical and mental health.
- Offering advice, guidance, and support to students who disclose substance misuse issues, including those in recovery, and making referrals to specialist services when necessary.
- Ensuring that the University supports the well-being of the student community through individualized support and in compliance with professional and legal requirements.
We believe that by providing holistic support and fostering a strong sense of community, we can meet our goal to ensure that every student feels supported, respected, and empowered to thrive both academically and personally.
University of Staffordshire remains dedicated to implementing evidence-based practices that uphold the dignity and health of our students, reinforcing our commitment to a safe and nurturing educational environment.
