Graduate story

International Door Manufacturer

Jonathon MacAllan is the UK marketing manager for Industrial Door Engineering, an international manufacturer and installer of specialist industrial and commercial door solutions. He is responsible for maintaining three websites, social media content, creative marketing materials for products and services, profiles for everyone at the company and more.

“There is so much to do and I’m having a lot of fun,” said Jonathon, who joined Industrial Door Engineering in November 2017.

Education in Business

Jonathon’s start in business came shortly after leaving school part-way through his A Levels. He moved to Essex and began working as a salesman, before signing up to a computer skills course at South East Essex College, in Southend-on-Sea.

“Sixth form didn’t go to plan,” he explained. “I left and moved south and got a job. The computer skills course taught me a lot. I can build a brand new computer from scratch, I learnt about web design, marketing, SEO. When I was 21, I moved back home to Crewe to help my Dad with his business.”

Jonathon took over the marketing side of the Alternative Therapy Clinic, designing the business’s website and promoting the treatments and services on offer. At the same time, he signed up to a Business Management degree at University of Staffordshire.

He said: “My Mum encouraged me to go to University and I picked Business Management because I wanted to help my Dad with his business. I was still working there while studying and learned a lot about wording the website and marketing materials. It was very valuable to me.”

Marketing Career

After graduating in 2016, Jonathon landed a graduate management trainee role at Enterprise Rent-a-Car in Stoke-on-Trent. After 18 months learning about people management, among other skills, he moved on to become marketing and communications officer at Impulse Embedded, an industrial computer systems supplier also in Stoke-on-Trent. The role didn’t suit, however, and three months later he joined Industrial Door Engineering, based in Northwich.

The company has been in operation for over 36 years, supplying doors and services to household names such as Morrisons, IKEA and Toyota. They now employ over 50 people and supply their products all over Europe.

Jonathon said: “I’m due to go over to a few trade shows in Europe over the next few months, which I’m looking forward to. I’m really enjoying the job and I’m looking forward to growing the role with the business and, hopefully, have a team under me eventually.”
