Course content

You will be trained to become a well-rounded musical theatre practitioner. The course combines practical skills development with an academic exploration of all aspects of the genre and the broader creative industries.

You’ll develop your knowledge and understanding of contemporary musical theatre practice and learn about the fundamental principles of working in the performing arts sector.

In the first year, you will undertake a range of practical modules to build your skills in singing, dance and acting for musical theatre. Other modules introduce you to the skills, techniques and approaches of academic study required in higher education. The year culminates in an integrated performance project.

In the second year, you will continue to enhance and develop your practical skills and apply this training through several performance-based modules.

In the final year, you have the opportunity to showcase your skills both individually and as part of a company in a major final public production. You are required to reflect on your development as a performer and explore your future career plans. You also produce your promotional materials, including show reels and industry CVs.

Teaching and assessment

Teaching

We know that our students learn in different ways. To help everyone get the most out of their studies, we teach through a mixed-mode approach mainly in practical studio settings. You will be taught in high-quality learning spaces throughout your course, and will have access to virtual learning environments to enhance your learning opportunities.

Assessment

You will be able to test your understanding of your subject informally before you complete the formal assessments that count toward your final mark. Each module will give you a variety of opportunities to receive informal feedback from your tutor. These may include studio discussions, presentations, milestone assessments, and practical assessments. Informal feedback is developmental and any grades you may receive for these do not count towards your module mark. There is a formal or ‘summative’ assessment at the end of each module. This includes a range of coursework assessments, such as essays, reports, portfolios, performances, presentations and an independent project. The grades from formal assessments count towards your module mark.

Feedback

You will normally receive feedback on formal coursework assessments within 20 working days following the date of submission. Examination feedback may take a variety of formats, including one-to-one discussions with your tutor. However, as a minimum, generic feedback will be made available to all students undertaking assessments.

Staff

You will be taught by a staff team with extensive professional experience within musical theatre and the broader creative industries.
