The C3 Research Centre is delighted to invite you to an online pre-launch of The Ethics of Documentary Film: New Approaches book on Tuesday 10 June at 3.30 pm
The event will feature Agata Lulkowska, Associate Professor of Film and Creative Practice Research, in conversation with the author Professor Agnieszka Piotrowska, an award-winning filmmaker and theorist, and PhD supervisor at University of Staffordshire.
Agnieszka is the editor of The Ethics of Documentary Film: New Approaches, which will be published in July 2025 by the Edinburgh University Press. The book promises to be a major intervention in the field of documentary film studies as it redefines the conversation about documentary film ethics in terms of a tension between the drive for knowledge and the desire/need to be ethical. It features 19 writers from across the globe, mostly women.
We will discuss the editorial process of getting the volume together, the decisions made, and the process of getting it commissioned, as well as the fact that the volume is mostly written by female writers. What was the reason for the editorial decisions and the most female contributors? What do people write about, and where does the documentary ethics sit currently? Was there a difference in approaches presented by the practitioners and ‘pure academics?’
Agnieszka and Agata will also play short clips/video essays linked to the volume.
