Mechanical Engineering Highlights

Guest Speakers and Professional Development
Our Mechanical Engineering students have had an exciting and busy semester. Our second year students have welcomed a guest speaker from Caterpillar discussing their career and the range of work Caterpillar gets involved in.
The first year students are working on their Professional Development module that incorporates sessions on design and analysis skills with career development sessions to help them find their future direction.
Our final year students are getting towards the end of their Engineering Project module now and putting the final hours in to develop their project and put their final report together, there’s some exciting projects looking at materials, sustainability and mechanisms.
Foundation students have been learning about engineering principles and getting practical experience with the labs, as well as having specialist lectures to support their analysis skills so they can build on those in future years.

Preparations for GradEx
Our final year students are working on their final projects ready for their May submission date and for GradEx, our annual exhibition of student work attended by local industry.
Christian (pictured below) took part last year with his project looking at 3D printing optimisation and then went on to the competitive R2Frontiers: Bioscience, Computing, and Engineering Program before starting to work in industry as a Design Engineer.

What's next?
A range of Mechanical students are going on a visit to BMW Mini Oxford soon where they will tour the factory and get to see a fully operational factory in operation.
Final year students are further preparing their Final Year Projects which they will showcase to industry at GradEx.  This is a valuable opportunity to network with potential employers.  Guest judges will be attending from national and local industry.
We look forward to showcasing the innovative and amazing range of Mechanical Engineering projects at GradEx, which can often be the culmination of 3 years of work and inspiration.  For example, Luke Cox showcased his 3D printed prosthetic hand which also caught the attention of BBC news.
