Jay Vernon receiving his award for Academic Mentor of the Year
Celebrating Staff Success Awards 2024
This year the Celebrating Staff Success Awards took place at the Kings Hall in Stoke-on-Trent. The occasion marks the annual celebration of achievements and awards for staff working at University of Staffordshire.
This year we celebrated two of our academic team receiving conferment to Associate Professors. Many congratulations to Dr Amy Burton, Associate Professor of Qualitative Health Research and Dr Sarah Rose, Associate Professor of Child Psychology & Education.
During the celebrations two of our academic team were awarded with Student Union Awards. These Awards are nominated by students to recognise the contribution people make to ensure that their student experience is the best it can be. The ‘Student Choice Staff Awards’ have categories to recognise where a member of staff has helped a student to feel proud to be part of Staffs.
This year, the wonderful Jay Vernon, course leader for BSc Psychology and Counselling, was awarded ‘Academic Mentor of the Year’. Jay’s nomination highlighted his support for students and how he prioritises their academic development through approachability, consistency and innovation: “The support he has shown not only myself but the whole of the Psychology & Counselling department has been absolutely fantastic and his passionate and easy going personality is infectious. This encourages us as students to engage more and want to strive for excellence within our studies”.
Jay commented “I’m honestly blown away in winning academic mentor of the year and being recognised by my wonderful mentees”.
Dr Justine Drakeford, Senior Lecturer in Psychology, was awarded the ‘Lecturer I’m Never Late For’ award. This award is in recognition of a lecturer whose classes students wake up for and always look forward to. They make the course engaging and interesting.
