University of Staffordshire Music & Sound Academics edit book on their annual electronic and experimental music event: NoiseFloor

Associate Professors at University of Staffordshire, Dr Dave Payling and Dr Marc Estiberio have curated a perspective on their annual NoiseFloor events

Collaboration, Engagement, and Tradition in Contemporay and Electronic Music - NoiseFloor Perspectives

The NoiseFloor Perspectives book by A Focal Press

NoiseFloor, University of Staffordshire’s annual electronic and contemporary music event, has been bringing together leading practitioners and academics from around the world for more than a decade.

Recent NoiseFloor events have involved artists and academics discussing details of their research and creative processes in paper sessions that have run alongside the established series of concerts, all open to current students.

This year, for the first time, our academics took NoiseFloor out of the UK to the Escola Superior de Mùsica in Lisbon, Portugal.  The idea behind this book was to bring together some of the cutting-edge research that has been showcased at NoiseFloor since Dr Dave Payling and Dr Marc Estibeiro took over as organisers in 2019.

The chapters cover many of the most pressing issues and themes in contemporary and electronic music today, including AI in music, audiovisual composition, environmental sound, and interactive sound systems. The ideas presented in this book show that the Music and Sound department at University of Staffordshire remains at the forefront of the field, and that our teaching remains, relevant, up-to-date, and informed by the latest research.

About the academics

Dr Marc Estibeiro

Marc is a guitarist and a composer who also plays the piano.  His academic work focuses on writing music for acoustic instruments and electronics. Together with University of Staffordshire colleague Dr Dave Payling, Marc has been organising the annual NoiseFloor contemporary and electronic music event since 2019.  Most recently they hosted NoiseFloor at the Escola Superior de Mùsica in Lisbon.

Dr Estibeiro has presented his works and research at conferences, concerts, and workshops around the world, most recently, for example, at the prestigious International Computer Music Conference in Shenzhen, China. As a performer, he studied classical guitar, but these days his focus is mostly on Jazz and other popular styles.
Outside of his academic work, Marc plays in a small four-piece band, and is also interested in writing music in more popular styles.  He loves sharing his knowledge and passion for music with our students.
