An Emmy and BAFTA award-winning producer has received Staffordshire University’s highest honour today.
Believe in yourself, go out there and give the world the best you’ve got!
Originally from Hartshill, Olwyn Silvester’s credits include several landmark documentaries with Sir David Attenborough, the highly-regarded Trial and Error on Channel 4, and multiple series for the BBC, National Geographic, History, Discovery and other channels.
Olwyn, who started her broadcasting career answering phones at BBC Radio Stoke, was presented with the Award of Honorary Doctor of the University at the King’s Hall in Stoke ̵ the venue where her parents met more than sixty years ago.
The award recognises Olwyn’s leading and influential role in the UK film and TV industry. It also acknowledges her drive and passion for developing young female talent, through mentoring, providing trainee opportunities and as a role model.
During her acceptance speech Olwyn offered graduates five pieces of advice; build a network, have integrity, don’t be afraid, look after your friends and family, and give the world your best.
She said: “Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t achieve your dream. You may or may not achieve it but it’s not for anyone else to tell you that you can’t do it. Believe in yourself, go out there and give the world the best you’ve got!”
More than 700 graduates are attending ceremonies this week at the King’s Hall, Stoke and Spode China Hall.
