The organisations have committed to work more closely after signing a Memorandum of Understanding which outlines a range of exciting opportunities.
This includes work placements and internships for Staffordshire University students to gain hands-on experience in areas such as HR, Marketing and IT.
The collaboration also aims to support the professional development of current staff at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service through Degree Apprenticeships and short courses.
Dr Nana Agyeman, Associate Dean (Recruitment) in the School of Justice, Sustainability and Security, said: “Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service plays a vital role in the region and we are delighted to be strengthening our relationship.
“There is much more to the Service than the firefighters on the ground and these work placements will help students to see the variety of job opportunities that exist. This hands-on experience will provide students with a fantastic foundation to kickstart their careers and will hopefully encourage them to stay in the region when they graduate.”
Staffordshire University will offer opportunities for Service employees to upskill and retrain, including through its Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship, Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship and Senior Leadership Apprenticeship.
Last year, Staffordshire University welcomed the outcome of a ‘good’ Ofsted inspection, reflecting the quality of its provision to 3,000 apprentices from more than 200 employers including four Midlands Police Forces, the British Army, the NHS, BT, Merlin Entertainments and Bentley Motors.
In addition to training, the partnership will explore ways in which the University can support community consultations undertaken by the Service and its agenda for improving equality, diversity and inclusion.
Rob Barber, Chief Fire Officer at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and a Staffordshire University graduate, said: “We are really pleased to be developing this professional relationship with Staffordshire University. It will provide opportunities for both organisations and more importantly for our communities.
“By working closely together, we can identify how we can develop our organisation and bring in new ways of working throughout all areas of the service.
“In addition, it will provide excellent vocational opportunities for those studying at Staffordshire University.”
