Staffordshire University has teamed up with the Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust to deliver free CPR Training sessions.
One of the main themes for Restart a Heart Day 2023 is promoting the use of public access defibrillators and this event will provide more people with vital CPR and defibrillation training to increase the skills, knowledge and confidence across our communities.
Sessions will take place at the University’s Centre for Health Innovation in Stafford on Monday 16 October 2023. The event coincides with ‘Restart A Heart’ Day, an annual initiative led by Resuscitation Council UK which aims to increase the number of people surviving out-of-hospital cardiac arrests.
Alongside delivering training to over 150 school pupils in the local area, the University’s CPR sessions, which last over two hours, will also help to train more than 130 members of the general public in how to perform CPR, an emergency lifesaving procedure, performed when the heart stops beating.
Elizabeth Isaacson, Senior Lecturer and Resuscitation Lead in the School of Health, Science and Wellbeing at Staffordshire University said: “We are looking forward to joining forces with the Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust to deliver what is sure to be a fantastic community event.
“Statistics show that each year over 30,000 people have an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the UK, with less than one in ten surviving. Giving CPR and using a defibrillator can more than double someone’s chance of survival, which is why we’re helping to ensure that local school children, members of the public and our University community have the skills to help save a life.”
Karen Fenton, Resuscitation Lead at Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust said: “Our Resuscitation Team work alongside Staffordshire University to provide life support training to clinical employees but we also understand the importance of raising awareness of cardiac arrests among the general public. One of the main themes for Restart a Heart Day 2023 is promoting the use of public access defibrillators and this event will provide more people with vital CPR and defibrillation training to increase the skills, knowledge and confidence across our communities.”
All sessions are being held from 9am to 4.15pm at Staffordshire University’s Centre for Health Innovation in Stafford. All sessions comprise of an introductory talk ahead of hands-on practical training, allowing delegates to safely practice adult CPR with the University’s expert team.
