I am active in teaching, research, bid writing and public engagement. I have extensive experience of creating work experience opportunities for students with businesses, charities and other organisations.

I have incorporated credited work experience into geography and tourism degrees as well as the MSc Digital Marketing Management.

I have carried out research for many UK government agencies including the Environment Agency, Health and Safety Executive, Scottish Natural Heritage, Scottish Environmental Protection Agency, Medical Research Council. Internationally I have worked on or lead several EU projects as well as work for the World Health Organisation.

During the COIVD crisis I have led several projects to support businesses with remote learning (sponsored by DBEIS).

EU Sustainable Managers in the Tourism Sector (SMARTOUR) (2015-2017). I was the overall lead for this project. A free online tool is one of the main outputs of the project - http://www.smartourproject.eu/

EU GPRIX Good practices in innovation support measures for SMES (GPRIX) 2010-2012. This assessed a set of regional innovation support measures with a focus on traditional manufacturing sectors. There are a huge amount of reports on the site including detailed descriptions of methodology and programmes examined, useful for anyone academic interested in innovation. World Health Organisation
I have been collaborating with the World Health Organisation since 2009. This includes presenting research, leading workshops, chairing meetings and the production of reports.

Enterprise and commercial interests

2020 Survive and Thrive – a series of 10 webinars (plus 1 to 1 help) delivered with Entrepreneurs in Residence to support business. Micro/small/medium. Project lead.

2020 Leading to Grow – supporting small and medium businesses funder DBEIS. Project lead.

2020 – ongoing – Small Business Leadership Programme – a free 10 week programme (funded by DBEIS) – local project lead. Overall lead Small Business Charter.

I have been one of the organisers for Global Entrepreneurship Week at the University over the last 6 years (this happens every November).

Linking students to work experience and other employability activity example include Totally Locally Burslem (marketing of independent businesses), social media and digital marketing for various organisations.

Staff and students have been supporting the Stone Food Festival with both delivery (inc. social media) and research on the festival for the last few years. This includes a visitor survey every year (ca 500-600) which is also used to inform the sponsor’s brochure.
