Dr Russell Campion

Head Of Department - Computing & Esports

Digital, Tech, Innovation & Business

I started at the University in 1990, studying a BA, then MRes, and finally a PhD before going into full-time teaching. I currently run the Department of Computing. Previously I have managed the Information Systems group at Stafford before this was separated to form a new academic grouping.

In the past I have held main roles of overall taught postgraduate award leader for both computing and engineering awards at Stafford and Stoke, as well as overseas. I was also award leader for the undergraduate BSc Multimedia Computing degree (helping set this up as our first multimedia / web award) and route leader for MRes Human-Computer Interaction. My role of taught postgraduate award leader involved me reviewing all our awards and module
provision and validating ten new titles, with eight related directly to areas of multimedia, web, and interactive systems, namely Computer Games Software, Computer Games Design, Mobile Computing, Mobile Computer Systems, Forensic Computing, Web Development, Web Multimedia, Multimedia Computing, Information Systems, and Knowledge Management.

I have developed 35 modules as module leader (mainly related to multimedia, web, or interactive systems design and programming). Delivery of these has mainly been through traditional, but more recently seen the addition of distance learning approaches (I have developed 4 distance learning modules as part of the MSc programme). Related to external projects I was involved in one funded by SOCRATES that developed a website to teach students at a distance multimedia. On a further practical level I was for two years responsible for managing the old Computing Schools web presence. I also led the setting up of the School’s first purpose built advanced media editing lab, and separate usability testing facilities to enhance student learning experiences.

Research interests

I read for a PhD in Digital Multimedia / Web Systems Design and Development. The work was titled “Triumph: A multimedia / web design method for task requirement formulation, media integration, device combination, and practical implementation design issues”. The research was driven by the realisation that digital multimedia / web development had thus far been informed by designer intuitions. The aim of the research was to remedy this problem, creating a comprehensive method including tools and practical techniques. The research investigated; task requirement’s design, media selection and integration at the interface, device combination with media, and the address of practical design issues.

I am currently supervising four first supervision PhDs and six second supervisions in the field of e-learning application design, digital media design, mobile education systems, RFID data representation, and health informatics.

In terms of publications I have 30 including conference papers and journals based mainly on digital multimedia and web based subjects with a smaller number on educational systems and mobile computing. I also have a chapter in a book related to task design based on my own TRIuMPh method. Apart from publications of my own I am a named reviewer for Wiley books and appear in the forward section in several web / multimedia texts.

Related to research grants I have been principal investigator on a £300,000 Teaching Company Scheme that researched mobile computing technology for use in navigation systems, and been involved with other schemes that resulted in papers and negotiated learning MSc’s. I have worked on external enterprise projects, and collaborated on research grants with others designing and implementing multimedia solutions, including the School of Health’s ‘Teenwise’ project.

Other projects have included leading a small SURI grant related to the use of mobile computing in education. Related to the universities ECSEC project I worked on a consultancy project which resulted in the development of distance learning digital multimedia / web course material for uses in SMEs.
