Institute of Education

As Professor of Education and Director of the Institute for Education Policy Research at Staffordshire University, I have been involved in teaching Master’s, PhD and EdD students. I have previously held positions at Keele, Manchester Metropolitan, Leicester and Wolverhampton Universities. My main teaching area is Research Methods. I developed a new MSc in Educational Research Methods at the University of Leicester and have published a book and journal articles on Educational Research.

My research interests include the education of minority ethnic groups; race and ethnicity; gender; social class; citizenship and young people; social justice; social inclusion; initial teacher training; the professional development of teachers; and qualitative research methodology. I have been a member of the advisory boards of research projects funded by the ESRC, Joseph Rowntree Foundation, and Nuffield Foundation. I have delivered invited keynote lectures in the UK and at overseas universities.

I have been on the editorial boards of academic journals, such as the ‘British Educational Research Journal’, ‘Research Papers in Education’ and ‘Gender and Education’. I was also a member of the ‘ESRC Peer Review College’ for a number of years.
