What is a University?

Suitable for: Y5, Y6

Length: 90 minutes

Aims:

  • To know what a university is
  • To know why someone might go to university
  • To know what is on a university campus

Students are introduced to the idea of university and we discuss, who might go, why they might go and what they will see when they’re there. Pupils are then challenged to build their own university out of lego.

Crazy Courses?

Suitable for: Y5, Y6

Length: 60 -90 minutes

Aims:

  • To know about a wide range of careers
  • To know some courses you might study at university
  • To create your own university course

Can pupils name all the jobs that go into running a hospital, a theme park, or even getting your breakfast on the table? This session explores the variety of different jobs available and some of the university courses that lead to them. Pupils are then challenged to design their own university course.

Primary2Secondary

Suitable for: Y6

Length: 60 minutes

Aims:

  • To know what to expect when you go to secondary school
  • To understand it’s ok to have some worries and anxieties about moving to Y7

In this interactive session we think about children’s feelings around transitioning to secondary school. We encourage an open, respectful space for children to share what they’re looking forward to as well as their concerns and think about practical strategies we can put in place to support with this change.

100 years of Stoke-on-Trent

A chance to have your students work exhibited as part of our University Degree Show 2025!

In June, we are celebrating 100 years of Stoke-on-Trent and are working in collaboration with The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery and Moorland Pottery to deliver a project around this.

Our 100 years of Stoke-on-Trent project consists of two, hour long, in school sessions suitable for Year 6. These are facilitated by university staff and can be delivered in school time or as optional after school sessions and should be booked for March 2025.

  • Session One: Explore the rich history of the Potteries using new Ceramic Loan and Learn boxes developed by The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery in partnership with British Ceramics Biennial and funded by Arts Council England. The session will celebrate the centenary of Stoke-on-Trent’s city status; its rich heritage and considerable contributions to the pottery industry.
  • Session Two: In a session designed and delivered by one of our fine art students, children are challenged to create a design to go on their very own ceramic coaster. A selection of these will be chosen to be printed onto ceramic coasters by Moorland Pottery which will be exhibited at the university.

We will be hosting an event in June for children and parents to come and see the work.

For more information on these and to register your interest, please email cu@staffs.ac.uk

Please note that due to event space, we are restricted to working with a limited number of schools and students.
