There are many factors that influence the trial of an accused individual. For example, in cases where a domestic offence is being tried, there may be special measures implemented by the Vulnerable Victims Unit, to ensure the trial does not cause undue harm to the victim. If an individual is found guilty, based on the circumstances of a case and sentencing guidelines, decisions will need to be made as to what sentence is appropriate for that individual.
This masterclass will explore these issues with reference to a specific offence, such as drug related offences, sexual offences, racially aggravated common assaults, domestic offences, or a specific civil issue. Specific case types can be requested in advance, to ensure learners gain maximum benefit from the masterclass.
During the Court Room Trial, students will be presented with a file of court documents, and the case will be presented in the form of a trial, hearing evidence from both the Claimant and the Defendant. Students will learn about the processes and issues of law, within the setting of a court room. Students will be asked to gather information through the trial and deliberate to determine the outcome of the trial.
