Researching stress

Masterclass

Outline

The aim of this masterclass is to introduce students to some of the research methods used in biological psychology. We will first introduce the topic of stress to students, how it can be defined and what happens to the body when we feel stress. We will then discuss with students the different methods that could be used to investigate stress, before looking into the use of physiological measures. Students will then be introduced to our biopacs - equipment that measures heart-rate and galvanic skin response - and will be instructed in their use. Students will then be invited to take part in a short stress experiment where they will be asked to collect data themselves using these biopacs. Finally, we will ask students to consider where the results could be applied, the limitations of the experiment, and how a future experiment might improve upon what was done
