Welcome to your Fashion course

Welcome to the BA (Hons) Fashion Course here at Staffordshire University. Starting University can be very exciting but also we understand it can be daunting too, so we want to help you prepare in advance and so you know what to expect.

We have put together this short to-do list and information sheet to help you prepare before your first day. Please can you complete these short tasks to make the transition as smooth as possible.

We want to make sure you know some of our team before you arrive. Hopefully this will help you recognise us and ensure you know who you can contact if you need any additional help and guidance.

Holly has a strong knowledge of industry standards and gained experience covering all elements from fabric testing, and digital and manual pattern cutting and is currently developing the use of AI and VR within fashion education.

Angela is a Design and Visualisation Lecturer on the BA (Hons) Fashion course here at Staffordshire University. She teaches across a variety of modules including Design, Visualisation and History and Theory of Fashion.

Interim Head Of Department

Head of Creative Industries, passionate about teamwork, student experience and employable creative skills. Background in fashion, industry practice and leadership. Experienced in curriculum development, industry links and interdisciplinary working.

Course Delivery

After great success of blended learning, we will carry on delivering some aspects of the course online, such as theory sessions and CAD workshops. The majority of your practical parts will be taught in our well-equipped workshops on Stoke Campus.

Pre-learning

You will be enrolled onto a Blackboard Organisation called Welcome Module, we the Fashion team have created this module with tasks to complete, this will give you a head start in getting used to Blackboard and other software/apps we use on the course.

Semester one activities

You will be with peers from different educational backgrounds, so we start from the basics of pattern cutting, construction, fashion illustration and CAD. Then you move on to a general overview of the fashion industry learning about all things fashion, avant-garde through to commercial design, you will also be introduced to consumer behaviour and styling and this is just semester 1.

Equipment and software

If you do not have you own laptop, please don’t worry there are computers in our department, the library and across the University that have this software, but you would benefit from investing in some headphones.

Trips and activities

There will be trips taking place during the academic year, and your Course Leader will notify you of these events and dates.

Graduate success

Several of our recent graduates have already gained employment.

We have also had students out on placement to Vivienne Westwood, Max Mara and Yours Clothing with more going out next year.

We are also members of Graduate Fashion Foundation previously known as Graduate Fashion Week (GFW).

We also work on Live Industry briefs, most recently 2nd year students completed a design and styling project working with Solo Artist Faith Vern.

Groups and societies

There is a Fashion Society that any one from any course can join, so please sign up for just £3 and meet other likeminded people that love all things fashion.

Academic skills

Whether you're joining us from school or college, or you're returning to education after some time away, everyone can benefit from the Academic Study Skills resources provided by the University library.

The Academic Skills team is here to support you throughout your academic journey and to help you gain the skills you need to reach your full potential. They can assist with academic reading and writing skills, give advice on how best to plan assignments, and help improve your time management.

The library's Academic Skills Guides offer the key information to make studying easier and give a comprehensive guide to the learning resources and services we offer.

Staffs CampusConnect is our student-led community app for new students. Connect with other people from your course, hometown or country, and even those with similar interests.

Welcome website

Our welcome website will provide you the link to your new student life. It's all about how you find your place at university, including everything from how to meet friends, feel confident in doing your academic work, being a member of your Student Union and getting involved in Union Societies, Academic Societies, Sports, Volunteering or representing your peers in your School.

Part of this Welcome Week - we have an exciting program of University and course level activities planned for you for your first week in September. We are also building an extended program for you to join a series of events throughout the first half of the autumn term. Further details will be shared with you via the Welcome website and Students' Union pages over the coming weeks.
