Course delivery
The course is designed to provide students with a wealth of learning opportunities through coursework, practical sessions, placements, external speakers, independent projects, CPD, and optional modules. Here’s an overview of each component:
Practical Sessions: Given the nature of the course, students will spend significant time in practical sessions to enhance their hands-on skills. They are encouraged to use our clinics outside of the teaching schedule to further refine these skills. Practical skills are taught in the curriculum and showcased in real-life situations within our internal sports therapy clinic and during external placements.
Assessment: Students will be assessed through various forms of coursework tailored to the specific topics and learning outcomes of their modules. These may include written reports, presentations, and case studies. Our assessments allow students to apply their knowledge and skills in practical contexts where traditional exams might not be suitable.
Our course is accredited by The Society of Sports Therapy and as such students must achieve a minimum attendance of 80% and all modules (and all elements of assessment) must be passed, and condonation is not permitted.
External Speakers: Visiting Fellows and external speakers will share their industry experiences and personal development insights with students. These sessions reinforce key study programme aspects and demonstrate real-world applications of the skills being taught. Students benefit from engaging discussions, independent thinking, and valuable behind-the-scenes insights into professional roles, inspiring them to pursue their career aspirations.
Placements: Students can participate in placement activities during levels 4, 5, and 6. Some placements are supervised and hosted by Staffordshire University, providing valuable practical experience in our dedicated patient-facing clinic (SUST Clinic). These placements contribute to the required hours for membership with The Society of Sports Therapists upon graduation. Students gain experience treating a variety of clients, from elite athletes to sedentary individuals, and work with external partners in diverse settings, including professional sports, sports therapy, physiotherapy clinics, and the NHS. Participation in national sporting events further enhances their practical experience.
CPD (Continuing Professional Development): Throughout the three years, students have opportunities to engage in CPD activities delivered by Staffordshire University staff and external professionals. Participating in CPD helps students network with industry professionals, enhances employability, and fosters their development as evidence-based healthcare practitioners, contributing to societal health improvements.
These diverse learning opportunities are designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and experience needed for a successful career in sports therapy.
