Trade Unions

The University recognise two trade unions; you can find out more about them below, and decide which is right for you should you choose to join.

UCU

UCU is the University and College Union and is the recognised trades union for university academic (and academic-related) staff in the UK. Membership gives you access to information from the Committee, related to regular joint meetings with management and the policies that affect you. It also gives access to impartial advice and support from the committee regarding individual work related problems.

Every member, wherever they work, receives our full range of member benefits and services, which includes:

  • Dedicated on-campus UCU Committee officers and departmental reps
  • Officers responsible for case work, welfare, health and safety and more
  • Impartial advice, support and help when you need it at work
  • Legal help for work related issues (after 90 days membership)
  • Your membership fee (usually between £19 and £22 a month) is paid by monthly direct debit straight to the union, it doesn’t go through the university.
  • You can join whether your contract is hourly paid, part time or full time.
