Practical Delivery

Developing your hands-on skills in our purpose-built laboratories and very own nature reserve will be a core focus across your degree.  We will support you as you develop from a novice bioscientist into an expert, independent practitioner.  Whether you are coming in with lots of experience or very little, we will ensure that you are comfortable and confident in the practical skills that are the cornerstone for a graduate in Biological Science.

Bioscientists Abroad

We know that Graduates who can demonstrate broad competences, such as international cultural awareness, find themselves at an added advantage when searching for work.

We are committed to supporting our students in gaining International Experiences. Have a look at some of our connections below and start thinking – where in the World can your degree take you?

A Guide to Biology Careers

Connected Communities

As a Biological Scientist studying at the University we will help you to recognise your role both locally and globally. We ensure that biology is at the heart of everything we do and that we connect with our community (and beyond) to promote the value and importance of our subject.

You will have many opportunities to take part in outreach events designed to promote your area of study – Check out our blog to learn more and start planning how you might get involved.

Course Delivery

A key aim of your award is to develop you as a professional scientific practitioner and this is reflected in our approach to teaching, learning and assessment. You will start with high levels of tutor driven activities; often with in-class competence-based work and gradually develop the skills, confidence and capabilities to drive your own learning both with us and beyond.  For example, your practical skills - an essential skill set demanded by employers of bioscience graduates - will be developed and practiced throughout your degree. In order to do this effectively you will spend a high proportion of class time in Levels 4 and 5 in the laboratory and/or field. In Level 6 more specialist practical skills are developed via your independent research project.

Throughout your course, theory and practice are integrated and many sessions will combine short lectures, seminars or workshops with practical work. This will allow theories and concepts to be explored, illustrated and reinforced and helps enhance your learning via direct experience. In-class activities will be supplemented by various online learning activities via the use of a virtual learning environment

Academic skills

Whether you're joining us from school or college, or you're returning to education after some time away, everyone can benefit from the Academic Study Skills resources provided by the University library.

The Academic Skills team is here to support you throughout your academic journey and to help you gain the skills you need to reach your full potential. They can assist with academic reading and writing skills, give advice on how best to plan assignments, and help improve your time management.

The library's Academic Skills Guides offer the key information to make studying easier and give a comprehensive guide to the learning resources and services we offer.
